One of the best and most influential guitarists of the world. A position he became not only due to his election as the worlds best guitarist in the English magazine Melody Maker, but also and especially because of his hazardous and inventive way of playing and his urge to develop. The albums, he recorded solo, but also as a member of Johnny & The Cellar Rockers, The Hunters, Brainbox and Focus, are the proof of that (source npi).

After a gig with Focus on the BBC in the 70′s, for a week, there where only pressed Focus-albums by the Dutch record company, to satisfy the English market. Years ago I saw Akkerman playing in the Rotterdam Doelen Theatre. While he performed a tremendous guitar solo, there were only 4 strings left on his guitar but the skilfulness and virtuosity of Akkerman did not make his solo sound worse.
