Al DiMeola, geboren op 22 juli 1954 in Jersey City (New York), studeerde kort aan de Berklee School of Music in Boston.
Begin 70er jaren verving hij Bill Connors in de fusion-formatie Return to Forever (met oa Chick Corea en Stanley Clarke). Met DiMeola behaalde Return to Forever zijn grootste commerciële successen.
Daarna ging hij solo.
Na vele succesvolle albums concentreerde DiMeola zich in de 90-er jaren steeds meer op akoestische World Music.
